Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro, standing at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), is the highest peak in Africa and a popular destination for climbers from around the world. Climbing Kilimanjaro is more than just a physical challenge—it’s an unforgettable adventure that tests your endurance, determination, and spirit. To make the experience enjoyable and increase your chances of a successful summit, choosing the right time of year is essential. The best time to climb Kilimanjaro is during the warmest and driest months, from December to mid-March and from mid-June to the end of October. These periods offer clear skies, manageable trail conditions, and breathtaking views that make every step worthwhile.

Kilifaith Adventures helps you select the ideal months for your trek to balance favourable weather, fewer crowds, and safety on the mountain. Whether you’re looking for a quiet climb in January or the stable conditions of September, careful planning ensures a smooth journey. With the right timing, preparation, and guidance, Climbing Kilimanjaro becomes an achievable dream, leaving you with memories of Africa’s stunning landscapes, unique wildlife, and the incredible sense of accomplishment that comes with standing on the “Roof of Africa.”

Climbing Kilimanjaro – A Month-By-Month Guide

January – March

These months are part of Kilimanjaro’s dry season, offering warmer temperatures and relatively clear skies. Trails are less crowded, making it a peaceful time to climb. Conditions are ideal for summit attempts, though early planning is recommended for peak availability.

April – May

April and May are the long rainy season, bringing wet trails, muddy paths, and limited visibility. While fewer climbers visit during this time, the mountain is lush and green. Experienced trekkers may still attempt the climb but should prepare for challenging conditions.

June – October

This is the second dry season and the most popular time to climb. Cooler temperatures and stable weather make it ideal for summit success. Trails can be busy, but clear skies reward trekkers with breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro’s unique landscapes.

November – December

November and December mark the short rainy season, with occasional showers and slippery trails. Despite the weather, climbing is possible, and fewer tourists mean a quieter experience. Proper preparation and flexibility are essential for a safe and enjoyable trek.

Choose The Right Time for Your Kilimanjaro Climb

Choosing the Best Time to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro can make all the difference in your trekking experience. The mountain offers a variety of conditions throughout the year, so understanding the seasons helps you plan wisely. The dry months, from December to mid-March and June to October, are the most popular and reliable times for a successful summit. During these periods, trails are generally in good condition, skies are clearer, and temperatures are more comfortable for trekking. Planning your climb during these months increases your chances of smooth progress, stunning views, and a memorable adventure.

However, Kilimanjaro can also be climbed during the rainy seasons in April, May, November, and early December. While trails may be wetter and more challenging, these months provide a quieter, more serene experience, with lush green landscapes and fewer climbers on the routes. Ultimately, choosing the best time depends on your priorities—whether it’s maximizing your summit success, avoiding crowds, or enjoying a unique off-season adventure. With careful planning and preparation, your Kilimanjaro Climb can become an unforgettable journey, filled with breathtaking scenery, personal achievement, and memories to last a lifetime.

We booked our Tanzania safaris from home with Kilifaith Adventures. Faith is very professional, not complicated, and wanted us to have a good time in Tanzania. Everything was organized very well, the price-performance ratio was very good, and as we have hoped. The guide had great knowledge about the landscape, the animals and could deal with the "safari problems" (flat tire and a little electronic problem). The cook Juma is absolutely amazing and we really felt that cooking is his passion. We always had great breakfasts, a huge fruity lunch, and very healthy and fantastic dinners. Great company and absolutely recommend them!

I did the 7 day Machame route. Our guide Joseph got us all to the top. We were met at the airport by Junior and took us to the lodge. We met a wonderful staff at the lodge and met our coordinator Faith. We did a 3 day safari after our climb and it was amazing as well. One of the best vacations we have ever done in 20 years. Highly recommend Kilifaith adventures and request Joseph Moshaas your guide.
